Almost half of elderly people have selenium deficiency. It speeds up your biological clock and weakens your heart. Even the Health Council admits.

Selenium. A trace element that you only need in small amounts, but whose effect can be significant. New research shows: older people with low selenium levels age biologically faster. Their cells wear out faster, their biological clock ticks harder.
From unimportant to crucial
For a long time, people thought that selenium deficiencies were rare in the Netherlands. The Health Council even found the standard “not relevant for information or monitoring”. But at the end of 2024, that changed: new figures showed that shortages are also possible here, especially now that more people eat plant-based foods. Since then, the standard has been in place again, and the council recommends actively monitoring selenium.
The proof from Germany
In the Berlin Aging Study II scientists examined more than 1,500 elderly people (an average of 69 years). Almost half appeared to be deficient. And it is precisely that group that is aging faster, measured in the DNA itself with epigenetic clocks. In particular, low levels of GPx3 — an enzyme that protects cells against damage — showed that deficiencies accelerate biological age.
Heart and clock
This is in addition to what has been known for some time: a lack of selenium can weaken the heart muscle and increase the risk of heart failure. The picture is becoming increasingly clear: selenium is not an afterthought, but a crucial factor in vitality and aging.
But beware: don't swallow loosely
Selenium never works alone. It needs its “friends”: zinc, copper and other trace elements. Without that balance, it can even backfire. Your body is not a chemistry box, but an orchestra. One violin can sound beautiful, but it's only together with the rest that harmony is created.
The core
- Shortages do occur, even in the Netherlands.
- They increase the risk of heart failure.
- They accelerate aging.
- Supplementing only works in balance.
