Vegetable protein doesn't seem as nutritious as thought after all

Vegetable protein is on the rise. But how nutritious is plant-based protein? It blocks the absorption of minerals. And that is not a good thing.

We just read a study that shows that vegetable protein does not seem as nutritious as expected. It blocks the absorption of minerals. Indeed, many industrial meat substitutes contain important nutrients that the body cannot absorb, according to researchpublished in the leading journal Nutrients.

The foods studied mainly contain proteins from soy and peas. According to the researchers, there were major differences in nutritional value. Because although many of the products contain many nutrients, such as iron and zinc, it is often in a form that the body cannot absorb.

“Overall, the estimated absorption of iron and zinc from the products was extremely low. This is because these meat substitutes contain many phytates, antinutrients that inhibit the absorption of minerals in the body,” says lead author Cecilia Mayer Labba from Chalmers University of Technology in Sweden. “Phytates bind to certain minerals in the digestive tract, blocking the absorption of minerals in the gut.”

And Iron deficiency is already a global problem...

  • Iron deficiency means that the body's iron stores are low or empty. The body needs iron to produce hemoglobin, which carries oxygen through the blood.
  • Iron deficiency in women is a widespread, global problem. In Europe, 10-32% of women of childbearing age are iron deficient.
  • This is precisely the category where vegetarians and vegans are most strongly represented. These women therefore do not eat red meat, an important source of iron that is easily absorbed in the digestive tract.
