The Health Council of the Netherlands knows it. Officially, since December 2024. A large part of the Dutch population has a selenium deficiency.
Their advice: more research is needed. Meanwhile, that deficiency has been creeping through your body for years. Unnoticed. Without a clear signal. Until it is too late to ignore.
Dutch soil is naturally low in selenium. This is not a new problem; it has been around for a long time. But intensive agriculture has made it worse.
Synthetic fertilizers feed plants with nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Not with trace elements like selenium. Pesticides kill the microorganisms that make selenium available to plants. Erosion destroys the fertile topsoil where minerals are stored.
The result: crops that look good but contain almost no selenium. And meat and dairy from animals fed selenium-poor feed are no solution either.
So you can eat a varied diet, choose organic, do everything right, and still structurally not get enough selenium. Not because of your choices. Because of the system.
Selenium is not a side issue. It is involved in processes that determine your long-term health.
Selenium supports the immune system, protects cells against oxidative stress, is essential for a well-functioning thyroid, and plays a crucial role in heart health. Research from the University Medical Center Groningen shows that 70% of heart failure patients have a selenium deficiency.

In December 2024, the Health Council issued an advisory report on selenium. The conclusion: there is indeed a problem. But more research is needed.

Meanwhile, that same Health Council acknowledged in the report that the shift toward a more plant-based diet—which they themselves encourage in the new Dutch food guidelines—can lead to people getting less selenium. It is not the depleted soil that is blamed. It is your healthy diet.
