You’re tired, but not in a way that a good night’s sleep can fix. You do your job. You care for others. You plan. You manage. You tell yourself you’re fine. Meanwhile, you notice you have less in reserve than you used to. Climbing stairs feels harder. Working out takes more effort. Your concentration slips faster. You might have heart palpitations, restless legs, hair loss, or feel dizzy more often.
It’s logical to blame stress. Doing too much. Hormones. Sleep deprivation. Maybe even burnout.
But we’re missing something important: it’s estimated that roughly one in six menstruating or pregnant women struggles with an iron deficiency. Children and teenagers going through growth spurts are also vulnerable, as iron is needed to create new cells. Teenage girls who are growing, eating selectively, and starting their periods are at even higher risk.
How are your iron levels, really? That’s the question that is often asked too late.
You can be overwhelmed and iron-deficient at the same time. You can have a busy life and be physically running on empty. And that combination is exactly what makes this type of fatigue so insidious.

Articles on iron deficiency in women emphasize this exact point: many women only receive attention or treatment once anemia has developed, even though symptoms can align with low iron stores much earlier. This doesn’t mean you should start interpreting your own lab results. It does mean you should feel empowered to ask more questions. Especially if you’ve been tired for a long time, have heavy periods, are losing hair, have restless legs, or notice that exercise suddenly feels much harder.
The symptoms of iron deficiency resemble things women often accept as normal for themselves. Tired. Dizzy. Brain fog. Easily out of breath. Restless legs. Hair loss. Brittle nails. Reduced concentration. Exercise suddenly feeling much harder.
These aren't symptoms that automatically make you think of iron. Especially not when your life is also just plain busy.
NRC recently highlighted the fact that many women go around with an iron deficiency without it being recognized; estimates range from 10 to 40 percent of women. De Volkskrant also wrote about iron deficiency as an underestimated problem in women, with symptoms such as persistent lethargy, heart palpitations, restless legs, brittle nails, and hair loss.
The point isn't that every tired woman has an iron deficiency. The point is that iron deficiency is common enough that it shouldn't automatically be dismissed as stress.
Women lose iron through menstruation. With heavy or prolonged periods, this can add up significantly. On average, a woman loses about 40 milliliters of blood per cycle. Internationally, more than 80 milliliters is considered heavy blood loss. In practical terms, this means using multiple full super-absorbency pads or tampons during a single cycle. With heavy periods, you sometimes cannot simply "eat enough" to fully compensate for the loss. You end up losing more than you can easily replenish through diet alone.
Pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding can also put further pressure on iron stores. Moreover, a severe deficiency during pregnancy can have consequences, such as an increased risk of lower birth weight or complications related to blood loss during delivery.
That is why prevention is important. You don't want to start thinking about iron only when your reserves are already empty.
The updated dietary guidelines are shifting toward more plant-based eating and less meat. While this may make sense from a health and sustainability perspective, there is an important nuance when it comes to iron.
Meat provides not only protein and B vitamins but also heme iron. This is the form of iron that the body absorbs most easily. Plant-based foods primarily contain non-heme iron, found in legumes, whole grains, nuts, seeds, tofu, tempeh, and leafy green vegetables.
Plant-based iron is valuable, but it is less easily absorbed. The Dutch National Food Consumption Survey shows that the average iron intake in the Netherlands is 11.6 mg per day. Without supplements, that figure is 9.9 mg per day. Girls and women have lower average intakes than boys and men.
Due to menstruation, women more often need to pay extra attention to iron. At the same time, they consume less iron on average. And if the proportion of highly absorbable heme iron decreases due to eating less meat, you shouldn't assume it will just resolve itself.

From there, you can make targeted adjustments with diet, add vitamin C to iron-rich meals, reduce coffee or tea consumption around mealtimes, and seek guidance from a doctor where necessary. This way, addressing iron deficiency isn't a desperate measure after the fact, but part of taking better care of your foundation.
Nutrition remains the foundation, but with iron, it's not just about what you eat. It's also about what you absorb.
Iron is not a mineral you should supplement blindly. While low iron is a problem, too much iron can also be undesirable. Excess iron can accumulate in the body and cause harm over time.
